Spring
Is For Specialties!
Unless you are one of the fortunate few who live in a part
of the country where winter means sunshiny days that average in the 70s, you are
most likely experiencing some degree of cabin fever at this time of the year. If
it isn’t ice and snow, it is mud and cold rain. The good thing is the Goldens
love the cold… and the snow… and unfortunately, most of them even like the
mud! And this cold weather does tend to make them grow coat as well, so I guess
even those of us who like the warm weather can be thankful for that.
With spring right around the corner, though, we are
probably all gearing up for specialties. While it is true that specialties
happen all year long, it seems that things really kick into gear in the spring
time.
There are many specialties coming up this spring.
Obviously, the early March shows are going to be closed at the time you read
this column, but you can still attend them. Watching the show is one of my
favorite parts of specialties so I can see which dogs I like, look at their
breeding, and get some ideas of what I think may or may not work with my own
lines. So if you missed entering the Valle Del Sol GRC Specialty on March 3rd
and the Badger Golden Retriever Specialties on March 4th (Friday) and
5th (Saturday), you can still go to the show and enjoy all the dogs.
Judge for the
Valle
Del Sol Golden Retriever Club Specialty is Sue Petermane, with Sweeps judged by Nancy Kelly, held at Scottsdale
Westworld in
Scottsdale
,
AZ.
The Badger specialties are indoor
shows held at the Milwaukee Sports Complex and there will be conformation,
sweepstakes, and obedience. Ken and Donna Buxton are the conformation judges.
The next weekend is the Everglades Golden Retriever Club Specialty in
West Palm Beach
at the South Florida Fairgrounds Exposition Centre. Judges are Kitty Cathey
with Jeff Chaffin judging sweeps.
A few shows that close on March 2nd are the Greater
Houston Golden Retriever Club (Onofrio)
and Fort Detroit
Golden Retriever Club (MB-F),
both being held
Friday March 18, 2005. Again, if you missed the entry dates, you can still
attend. Simply click on the links and you can get more information. Both are
part of a 3 day circuit (2 allbreed shows follow them). The
Michigan
shows are indoors (Cobo Hall)
and the two accompanying allbreed shows are some of the few remaining benched
shows, although the specialty will not be benched. The
Texas
specialty will be held outdoors at the Houston Farm & Ranch Club.
Also closing March
2nd is the Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club - Specialty and
Obedience Trial, being held Saturday March 19, 2005. Judges are
Howard Falberg doing BOB and Dogs and Jeff Pepper judging Bitches and Jr Show.
Sweeps judging for Bitches and BPIS will be Tammy Tomlinson and Sweeps Dogs and
BVIS judge will be Jennifer Boyle. The show will be held at the
Sullivan
County
Community College
in Loch Sheldrake, NY.
The last weekend of March, there will be another specialty in
Texas
. The Dallas-Ft. Worth Metro Golden Retriever Club will hold
their specialty on Saturday March 25, 2005
the judge will be Jane P. Jensen
and Sweeps will be judgd by Steve Bolton. The show
location is the Amon G Carter Jr Exhibits Building in
Fort Worth
,
TX
.
April is the
beginning of a lot of specialties, mostly in the East and eastern
Midwest
area. You can hit a specialty several weekends in a row this month, so get
ready! And hopefully if you didn’t know about them before this column, you
will still have time to enter them, too.
On April 9th
and 10th, the Golden Retriever Club of Greater St. Louis will be
holding their back to back specialties. They use a private superintendent,
Sherry Spavale, and the shows are indoors at the Wayne C. Kennedy Recreation
Complex in
St. Louis
,
MO.
These shows did not show up on Infodog, so be sure to get the information on
them if you are interested in going. There will be conformation, sweeps, and
obedience both days. Judges for conformation are Ron Menaker (Sat.) and Ann
Yuhasz (Sun.) with sweeps judges Charles Rogers (Sat.) and Peter Stager (Sun.).
Closing in March 23rd. For more information, go to: http://www.grcgsl.org/Show.htm
The next weekend, on April 16th, the Potomac
Valley Golden Retriever Club hosts their 31st annual specialty in
West Friendship Maryland. This show is always well attended with very large
entries and will be held indoors at the Howard
County Fairgrounds. They will also host Rally along with obedience and of
course, conformation and sweeps. The superintendent is Bob Peters and the judges
are Erik Bergeshagen (Dogs and Intersex) and James White (Bitches and Junior
Showmanship) with Ms. Dawn Buttion judging sweeps. This show
is flanked by allbreed shows in
Harrisburg
PA
known as the Blue and Gray Clusters with shows beginning on Thursday. There
will be a WC and WCX and Pee Wee Hunter Stakes held on Sunday as well. You can
get more information at: http://pvgrc.org/specialty/2005/
.
After this, you should hurry home and get rested up because the very next
weekend, you have the choice of two separate specialties combined with two or
three more days of all breed shows which will most likely pull majors as well.
With a bit of traveling, you could stretch it into four days of shows, including
two specialties. The beginning of this marathon weekend is on Friday April 22,
2005 when you can take in the Gunpowder River Golden Retriever Club Of Maryland Specialty
at the
Maryland
State
Fairgrounds
in
Timonium
,
MD.
Judging conformation will be Barbara
Shaw with sweeps and Junior Showmanship judged byTerry A. Pierce. Then at
the same location, there are three allbreed shows with Goldens judges Ann Bolus,
M.H. Brown, and Ms. TL Hundt.
Or you could jump in your car after the specialty and head for the
Cardinal Cluster in
Columbus
Ohio
where the Golden Retriever Club Of Columbus Ohio Specialty
will be held at the Ohio Expo Center/Ohio State Fairgrounds on Saturday April
23, 2005.
Judges are Linda L. Robey for breed and Vicki Seiler for
sweepstakes. Then on Sunday and Monday, there are allbreed shows with Golden
judges Donna Buxton and Barbara Alderman.
The next weekend, you can head for
the west coast to attend back to back specialties starting with the Golden Retriever Club Of America Western
Regional Specialty being held Thursday April 28, 2005 with
judges for Bitches being Sandra
J.B. Dunn and Dogs/BOB
judged by Linda Stebbins-Hurlebaus.
Sweepstakes will be judged by Deborah Koopman. Then the
next day, Friday, April 29, 2005, is the Nor-Cal
Golden Retriever Club Specialty, being judge by Friday,
April 29, 2005 (Bitches) and Ainslie Mills (Dogs/BOB). Both shows will be held
at
Bolado
Park
in
Hollister
,
CA
, followed by two allbreed shows on Saturday and Sunday at the same location,
with Golden judges Charles Olvis and Lester Mapes.
On the other side of the country on Saturday and Sunday is the Golden
Retriever Club Of America Eastern Regional Specialty at the
Camden
Equestrian
Center
in
Camden
,
SC.
This show is hosted by the Sandlapper GRC and they will have their specialty
the following day. Judges for the Eastern are Bitches/Juniors by Jean Fournier and Dogs/BOB
by James
G. Reynolds. Sweeps judge will be Julie Caruthers. Then on Sunday
May 01, 2005,jJudges will be Stephanie
Seabrook Hedgepath for dogs and Bitches/BOB/Juniors will be judged by
