Keeping Your Dog Cool in the summer It is crucial for all owners and handlers to keep a close eye on their dogs during the summer show season. It will be very hot and most likely very dry this summer making it very humid and muggy. It only takes a few minutes for a dog to go down with a heat stroke.
Here are a few ways to keep your dog cool while active during the summer months. For Breeds with coat like a Golden you will want to have multiple cool towels in a color to put on the dog in places to cool the dog quickly as possible. You can also purchase cool beds that will stay cold for days and can go in the dogs crate or they can lie on outside of the ring. Fans help circulate air and at least keep air blowing on the dog. Always have a squirt bottle and if needed a water bucket at the ring for your dog. You can squirt the dogs’ feet to help cool them down. Keep them in a shaded area as much as possible.
Some people believe in supplying electrolytes back into the dog at the end of the day. You can use pedialite (just like for a baby) to do this.
Please remember that it only takes a few minutes for a dog to go down in heat stroke. DO NOT do anything with a dog that you would not do with a human. Don’t leave the dog in the car while you go in the store shopping without the car on and don’t put the dog out in a kennel all day with no shelter or water. If you are going to a dog show a vet will be at the show if you need them and an after hour vet will be listed in the judging schedule and premium lists. If your dog does go down with a heat stroke one of the best survival tactics is to immediately immerse the dog in cool water and see the vet. Signs of heatstroke are panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. |
